THE AMAZING HYMNAL

Four little numbers—8.6.8.6—opened the first door. Once we begin noticing the clues hiding in a hymnal, an ordinary book starts to look very different.

The Amazing Hymnal

Have you ever noticed how much information can hide in plain sight?

Open a hymnal and most of us know exactly what to do. Find the hymn number. Turn to the page. Sing the hymn. Close the book.

But what if we didn't close it quite so quickly?

What if we looked at the words before singing them? What if we counted syllables? What if we started noticing those little letters, numbers, names, and indexes that have been sitting on the page all along?

That's where this Collection begins.

And we're going to begin with one of the most familiar hymns in the English-speaking world: Amazing Grace.

You probably know the words. You almost certainly know the melody. But we're going to pull the two apart, look at them separately, and discover something rather surprising about how hymns actually work.

Along the way, four little numbers are going to keep following us:

8.6.8.6.

They may not look particularly exciting.

But before we're finished, those four numbers will lead us from poetry to music, from John Newton to a tune called NEW BRITAIN, and eventually into one of the hidden tools tucked away in the back of a hymnal.

You don't need to read music.

You don't need to be a musician.

You don't even need to own a hymnal.

You only need to be willing to look a little more closely at something you may have been looking at for years.

Because sometimes an ordinary book becomes much more interesting when somebody shows you where to look.
