THE AMAZING HYMNAL

Long before Google, the hymnal had its own search engine. Words, Scripture, subjects, people, tunes—even the organization of the book itself can help you find your way. Pasted markdown

THE AMAZING HYMNAL
The Amazing Hymnal - The Old Rugged Search Engine

Have you ever tried to find something in a hymnal when you didn't know exactly what you were looking for?

Maybe you remember a few words—but not the hymn number.

Maybe you're reading a passage of Scripture and wonder whether there are hymns connected with it.

Maybe you're looking for something about hope. Or grief. Or gratitude. Or trust.

Maybe you've discovered a hymn writer whose words speak to you, and you'd like to know what else that person wrote.

Today, we'd probably reach for a phone.

Type a few words.

Press Search.

But long before Google, somebody had already figured out how to make a book searchable.

And your hymnal may be one of the most sophisticated examples sitting on your bookshelf.

Names. Dates. First lines. Authors. Composers. Scripture passages. Topics. Tune names. Indexes.

They're all connected.

In this Collection, we're going to stop treating all those pages and tiny bits of print as something to skip over on our way to the music. Instead, we're going to use them.

We'll search by words.

We'll search by Scripture.

We'll search by subject.

We'll search by person.

And eventually, we'll step back far enough to discover that even the order of the hymns is telling us something.

No Wi-Fi required.

No password.

No search box.

Just a book—and a surprisingly clever system for finding your way around inside it.
