We've spent a great deal of time looking inside a hymnal.

We've counted syllables.
Explored meters.
Discovered tune names.
Followed authors, composers, translators, and arrangers through centuries of history.

We've even learned to read some of that mysterious tiny print.

But there's something we haven't really talked about.

Us.

The people who open the book.
The people who sing the hymns.
And the people who carry those hymns with them long after the book has been closed.

Have you ever heard a familiar hymn and suddenly remembered someone?
Perhaps a parent.
A grandparent.
A friend.
Someone who once stood beside you in church.

Perhaps you remember a wedding, a funeral, a Christmas Eve, or an ordinary Sunday morning that suddenly doesn't seem so ordinary anymore.

How can a few words and a familiar melody bring back so much?
That's where we're going to begin.
But there's another side to this story.
Someone had to decide which hymns would be printed in the book.

And choosing hundreds of hymns from thousands of possibilities means making some very difficult decisions.

What happens when a hymn someone has loved for a lifetime doesn't make it into the new hymnal?

Suddenly, we're not simply talking about music.

We're talking about people.
Memories.
Traditions.
Change.

And perhaps something we never expected to discover when we first opened this ordinary-looking book.

A hymnal doesn't contain only hymns.

Sometimes it contains pieces of our lives.
